The honest man.

Here, a farmer merrily drives his horse over the high hills in autumn. He does not shrink from his work or haggle for profit. This honest farmer works a days labor and charges a day’s wage; he is an honest man.

This homely image reminds me of Chesterton’s story, The Sins of Prince Saradine. In this tale Father Brown and his friend Flambeau finally escape the intrigues and deceptions of Prince Saradine’s Reed Island as their boat gentle wafts down a small English stream. Father Brown and Flambeau leave the mysteries of fairyland for “happier places and the homes of harmless men.”

This farmer is a honest man and consequently a happy man.
